Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
This week’s theme is “Inspirational/Thought-Provoking Quotes from Books” but I don’t have a list of quotes and I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. So I am going to copy Jordan @ Forever Lost in Literature and steal her take on the topic:
Favorite Quotes from my Favorite Books According to Goodreads
She used her most recently read books, but I am going to use my most rated books and then pick the most liked quote from that book!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
5,882,440 ratings, 4.47 average rating, 94,618 reviews
“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
Ahhh I know exactly where and by who this was said! Dumbledore said this to Harry when Harry kept visiting the Mirror of Erised ❤
The Hunger Games
5,697,899 ratings, 4.33 average rating, 162,351 reviews
“You don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope.”
I don’t remember this quote and I’m not a huge fan of it. Yes, its true but its not that inspirational or important, in my opinion.
Twilight
4,403,321 ratings, 3.58 average rating, 98,806 reviews
“I like the night. Without the dark, we’d never see the stars.”
I love stars so I love this quote. I know its a lot deeper than just liking stars, but I like any analogy with stars.
To Kill a Mockingbird
3,895,642 ratings, 4.27 average rating, 82,629 reviews
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”
Ah yes, the old “You never know someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes” quote. Always a classic.
The Great Gatsby
3,260,603 ratings, 3.91 average rating, 59,312 reviews
“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
This one makes sense for The Great Gatsby because he is stuck in the past.
The Fault in Our Stars
3,008,659 ratings, 4.24 average rating, 148,987 reviews
“As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”
This reminds me of the Pride and Prejudice Quote “I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.”
Divergent
2,579,006 ratings, 4.21 average rating, 104,926 reviews
“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.”
I like this one! Ordinary acts of bravery are super important and often don’t get enough credit.
1984
2,564,697 ratings, 4.17 average rating, 57,295 reviews
“Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood.”
Hmmm this one makes you think. Is it too much to ask for both? I think one without the other isn’t enough.
Pride and Prejudice
2,554,441 ratings, 4.25 average rating, 56,732 reviews
“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! — When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
Urg, I hate this quote. On its own it is amazing, but it is said insincerely by Miss Bingley when she was trying to get Mr. Darcy’s attention. I wish it was said by a different character who actually meant it.
The Hobbit
2,512,016 ratings, 4.26 average rating, 42,756 reviews
“Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?”
This is a great quote but I am surprised it is the top quote because it is very random.
If you are wondering if the number of likes a quote has is related to the number of ratings the book has, it doesn’t seem they are. I was curious so I graphed it:
Have you read any of these? What are your favorite book quotes? Let me know!
That Fault in Our Stars quote (and the P+P that you quoted) they’re both so lovely!
Good point about the other P+P quote I think a lot of people unknowingly contribute that one to Elizabeth. I did before I actually read the book!

I love them both haha 🙂 That is one of my favorite P&P quotes. (The one I put under TFIOS, not the other P&P one!) It is totally something Elizabeth would say and she would actually mean it! But unfortunately it was said sarcastically haha

Such great quotes!! I love the ones from HP and The Hobbit 😊 But ugh that P&P quote always gets taken out of context and it’s so frustrating! 😤

Its super frustrating!! It drives me nuts because it would be such a great quote but it was said insincerely and everyone takes it as is!

I like that Twilight quote as it is so true! Without pain we would not feel joy as strongly as we do. Without rain we would not enjoy sunny days.

Exactly! The bad times make the good times even more special ❤

That’s a really neat idea, taking the most popular quote from the book. Some are great, but I agree they don’t always make sense.

Haha yup and sometimes they need more context 😂😂
