I have been meaning to read books by both Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman for a while, and when I learned about the show I figured I would kill three birds with one stone and read Good Omens, then watch the show!

Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman are hilarious.  I rarely ever read the forward or the after-the-book add-ons, but I read both in Good Omens.  I loved reading Terry’s thoughts on Neil and vice versa.  They both have super unique personalities and, just based on their snippets before and after the book, its obvious that they get along great and have a great sense of humor.  I definitely want to read more books by both of them. (its a good thing they have written a kajillion books between the two of them)

I have no idea what to rate Good Omens.  I absolute loved it, but at the same time I feel like I missed a lot?  I am not religious and I am not British so I didn’t understand a lot of the references and jokes.  I want to give it 5 stars, but if I didn’t understand it can I really rate it that high?  Also I’m worried that one of the reasons I loved it was because of the hype?  I really wanted to love it and I was super excited to read it.  Would I have loved it as much if I went in with no expectations?  My guess is yes, I would have loved it, but maybe not a 5 star love? Though, on the other hand I kept laughing out loud while reading it (much to the annoyance of my brother who kept wanting to know what was so funny, and not getting it when I tried to explain) and I genuinely enjoyed it. Hmmm I seem to have talked myself into giving it a 5! (but take my 5 with a grain of salt!)

Crowley was my favorite character! He was pretty awesome and he reminds me of Crowley from Supernatural.  I know that both Good Omens and Supernatural are both based on real religious figures, so does that mean that Crowley is a bible character and that this is his actual personality? (sorry I don’t know much about religion and I am genuinely curious!)  While reading Good Omens I kept picturing Supernatural Crowley so it will be interesting to see how Good Omens Crowley is portrayed by David Tennant

Good Omens was hilarious and I already want to re-read it.  I also can’t wait to watch the TV show! I know I missed a lot because I am neither British nor religious, but I was still able to enjoy the story! And, the parts that I did understand were hilarious.  Overall I am super glad I read it!

  1. I felt like I got the show more than the book if it makes you feel better. I also think much as I enjoyed it the book was a little dated? Tennant is a great Crowley though- actually they both were great! Hope you enjoy the show as much as the book!

    1. I got the show a lot more too 🙂 I am going to write a review of the show hopefully tomorrow! I thought Tennant was great too 🙂 Tho I had a slight adjustment period switching from Supernatural Crowley to Tennant Crowley where I was super conflicted haha

  2. I’m very jealous – I still haven’t seen the show! Enjoyed the book when I was a teenager but agree with @bookbeachbunny that some of the references in it are a bit dated. Today, the fourth horseman of the apocalypse would probably be called no-edit-button-on-twitter.

  3. I’m still trying to make my way through this book. I love Gaiman but haven’t read anything from Pratchett until Good Omens. I’m struggling a bit, not because I don’t like the writing or the story, but because there’s just SO much going on and I feel like that if I don’t read it really slowly, I’m going to miss so much? It’s a bit confusing tbh 🙂 BUT I am looking forward to finishing it. Wondering if I should read the book before watching the show (dunno if I can wait, the show looks so good)! Lol

    1. I did watch the show this weekend and it was a lot less confusing than the book. So maybe if you are struggling than watching the show could help you understand the book? (wow that was hard for me to say haha I am a strong believer in always reading the book first!)

      1. Hahaha I totally get what you mean. I’m the same although that usually leads to me never watching the show because my endless TBR and mood reading ways means I don’t get to the book for a long time 😂🙈 But I think I’ll give the book one more go and then if not, I’ll watch the show!

  4. I’m so glad you liked this! 😀 You’re going to watch the TV show, right??

I heard somewhere that Crowley from Supernatural was inspired by Crowley from Good Omens, which I can definitely see. I don’t think they’re based on any actual biblical/mythological figures, but I could be wrong.

    1. I watched it this weekend! (instead of getting caught up on all my comments haha) It was awesome too!! I will write a review later this week sometime 😀

And that would be really cool if that was the case. They are super similar! 🙂 Thanks!

    1. Haha the couple times I tried to explain to him what was funny and he just stared at my blankly 😂😂 So I gave up trying to explain but that didn’t stop him from asking me what was so funny everytime I laughed 😂 Gotta love siblings ❤

  5. If you were confused, I’ll prob be confused too if I read this because I am just easily confused lol, and I’m also not British and don’t know all that much about Christianity. But I’m glad to hear you loved it anyway! I’m kind of tempted to try it myself because of all the hype.
