Update on My Hand and the Dog

Thank you everyone for the well wishes ❤ I really appreciate them! You guys are awesome (and I will respond to your comments eventually! I have a lot of catching up to do)

For those of you that missed it, you can read the full version here, but the short version is I got bit trying to help a dog that had gotten hit by a car.

I got an update from Animal Control on Monday, and the dog is doing well.  He is recovering as expected and he is back home with his owners! I won’t get another update from Animal Control and I haven’t been contacted by the owners so I am going to have to take it on faith from here, but it sounds like he is going to be just fine ❤

As for me, all of my injuries, except for my thumb, are healing quickly.  I have no pain in my fingers, wrist or hand and have full range of motion.  My thumb is still swollen and hurts a lot, but I had a Doctor’s appointment today and he thinks it is fine, it just needs time to heal.

Here are pictures of my wound progressions:

I don’t have full range of motion back in my thumb yet and it is still swollen.  Here is a video of it compared to my uninjured right thumb:

With my thumb the Doctor thinks it could be one of three things:

  1. It took the brunt of the damage and just needs more time to heal
  2. There could be a deep ball of infection that the original antibiotics didn’t kill
  3. I could have a hairline fracture.

He took X-Rays of my thumb and there is a tiny line but he can’t tell if it is a nutrient vessel or a stress fracture.  Apparently nutrient vessels are normal parts of the human body and can sometimes show up in X-Rays and are often mistaken for stress fractures? But even if it is a fracture they wouldn’t do anything about it, so either way its a moot point.

Thumb X Ray

He also said he doesn’t really think its a deep infection because they are kind of rare in cases like this.  He doesn’t want to give me a second round of antibiotics because the next set are super rough on your stomach.  If my thumb takes a turn for the worse then I will start those antibiotics but he doesn’t want me to take them if I don’t need them.

He also did some checks to see if I had nerve or tendon damage and he doesn’t see anything concerning.  Basically he thinks it is fine and I just need to give it more time to heal.

I asked him when he thought I would be able to play sports again and he said not until at least September, so that really sucks.  I don’t know how I am going to survive!

Anyway, I’m fine (or I will be soon enough) I’m just a big baby when it comes to injuries 😂 But I don’t regret it at all! I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Thanks again for all your well wishes ❤ Don’t forget to give your fur babies lots of hugs and cuddles ❤ Here are some random dog gifs, just because they are adorable:

  1. I’m glad you’re doing better.

And I had no idea that doctors don’t do anything for tiny fractures on thumbs! I thought that rule only applied to toes. 🙂

Either way, I hope you get full range of motion back in it soon.

  2. Those are adorable dog pics! ❤ A while back, Mr. Wyrm injured his big toe, and it took a long time for the range of motion to return to normal there, too. So I think it's probably just the normal healing process, even if it does take annoyingly long. Glad to hear you and the dog are doing well!

  3. Sorry your recovery is taking a while. Injuries like that to the joints can take a bit to get back to normal. Even now my elbow still bothers me sometimes from when I had that bad cat bite. Hope your thumb gets back to full function soon!

  4. It looks so much better! I’m glad you’re healing (I’d have done the same thing but maybe next time cover the dog with a blanket to restrain it first). I hope the thumb gets better soon
