They say never meet your heroes, and apparently that goes for memoirs too…

Don’t get me wrong. I still think Carrie Fisher is an amazing lady, and I found out she is really funny, but this book definitely popped my “perfect Star Wars world” bubble.

I knew Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford had a dalliance on set, but I didn’t know the details. I had romanticized it and was in love with the thought of them together.  I was super excited to find out how it really went down.  I don’t want to ruin anything for you, so I will just say I liked the story in my head much much better than reality.

And it wasn’t just their relationship, there were other parts, about her feelings toward the movie, her feelings towards signing autographs, what she was subjected to on set by male directors. It was eye-opening and I would rather not have learned most of it. I know it exists and needs to be addressed, but in the aspect of Star Wars, I liked not knowing a lot better.

If you are obsessed with Star Wars and have this perfect happy world in your head then I don’t suggest reading this one.  I was originally going to read the rest of Carrie Fisher’s books but I am going to pass, because I don’t want anything else ruined for me.

I did enjoy listening to Carrie Fisher narrate her own book and she is hilarious, so if you don’t have a Star Wars bubble then it is a good memoir (if you don’t mind learning about Star Wars stuff).

  2. I have seen some of Carrie Fisher’s stand up comedy and so I already knew a lot about the stuff that went on behind the scenes as well as all about her private life. I personally enjoy that side of her, it’s what gives her her personality. But I can see how it would change the way you feel about her.

    1. That makes sense. I was kind of torn because I did love seeing her personality, I just didn’t necessarily want to know the Star Wars stuff, haha but I also didn’t know that I didn’t want to know otherwise I wouldn’t have read it 🤣

  5. I’m a sucker for that behind the scenes stuff so I read this knowing a lot about it but I can definitely see your point. She does have some good stuff that’s far less Star Wars and more about her battles with mental health that are better reads.

    1. I liked learning about Carrie Fisher! I guess I just didn’t like knowing the stuff that went on behind the scenes. If I knew which of her other books didn’t have Star Wars stuff then I would read them!

  7. I really enjoyed this one, but I also wanted to have to more “real” view of the filming of Star Wars than I’d seen before so it was fine for me in that aspect. Also, I listened to it *very* soon after Carrie’s passing, so that made the whole thing a lot more poignant than it could have been.

  8. I completely get you. I recently learned something about the singing in my favourite musical, West Side Story which didn’t exactly ruin the musical for me, but stole some of the magic and I think I would rather have not known it to be honest… so I know the feeling. I think I will still read this one because I know a lot about the behind the scenes already – I’m that kind of Star Wars fan – so I think it would be nice to know more, from her view of things.
