Friday Face-Off: Dinosaurs

This is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, but kept up by Lynn’s Book Blog.

“Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the earth.

This weeks theme: A cover featuring a dinosaur(s)

My Choice: Jurassic Park

I know this is a pretty boring choice, but the only books I have read with dinosaurs on the cover are “Don’t Forget Dexter” and “All My Friends are Dead” and they don’t have multiple covers! So I am going to go with the classic today!

I am surprised and impressed with the lack of movie covers.  There are really only two that seem like movie covers to me.  (Tatran 1993 and Heyne 2013).  I was also impressed with how many good covers there are! There is a decent amount of variety and there are very few I don’t like.

Worst Covers:

Best Covers:

Special Mention:

J20

This cover is just so ridiculous that I needed to call it out! It doesn’t fit into the worst or best categories, its just … different.

Winner:

J62

This was an impossible decision to pick just one!  I really like all of the “Best Covers.” But my eye kept coming back to this one.  I like the contrast of the red and the white and the black, and I like the little butterfly that looks like it is about to be eaten.

Which is your favorite? Do you agree with my pick? Let me know in the comments!

Friday Face-Off: Hands / May the 4th be with you

This is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, but kept up by Lynn’s Book Blog.

A Hand without a hand? A bad jape, sister.

This weeks theme: A cover featuring a hand/hands.

My Choice: Han Solo at Stars’ End

I know! I know! The theme is “Hands” not “May the 4th be with you” But today is Star Wars day and it would be blasphemous not to do a Star Wars post.  Plus, the super famous “Han Solo Stance” kinda features his hand … on a blaster.

220px-Han_Solo_depicted_in_promotional_image_for_Star_Wars_(1977)

That is literally the first picture that comes up when you google “Han Solo” It totally counts!

Covers:

Del Rey Sept 1979 | Del Rey March 1979| Del Rey 1980 | Sphere 1979
Mondadori 1980 | Amber 1996 | Fleuve Noir 2005 | İthaki Yayınları 2005
Del Rey Jan 1979 | Pendragon Könyvkiadó 1992 | Эксмо 2000 | Bruna 1980

Most of the covers are just variations of the original cover (Del Rey Jan 1979) with the “Han Solo Stance”, Chewbacca, with the two moons behind them. I do like that cover but its kind of old and out dated looking. Even tho it only came out a year later, I like the Del Rey 1980 cover much better.

Winner:

Han03

Which is your favorite? Do you agree with my pick? Do you love Han Solo too? Let me know in the comments!

Friday Face-Off: Medieval

This is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, but kept up by Lynn’s Book Blog.

“Those darling bygone times… with their delicious fortresses, and their dear old dungeons, and their delightful places of torture”

This weeks theme: A cover that is positively medieval.

My Choice: Endure

Covers:

I have a tendency to choose covers with tons of variations, so this week I decided to keep is simple, even though there are other books that are more medieval ish, (Game of Thrones #2 and #3) I chose Endure because there are only 2 different covers!

American Version | German Version

Fun fact: Not only were the covers changed in the German Versions, the titles were changed as well:

  • Defy -> Schwert und Rose (Sword and Rose)
  • Ignite -> Schwert und Glut (Sword and Embers)
  • Endure -> Schwert und Flamme (Sword and Flame)

Winner:

Endure01

The German covers are WAY cooler! The girl on the cover (Alexa) looks so fierce and bad ass! So much better than the flowery weapons on the American covers! Tho I do like that the American covers, when put side by side, the title staggers lower on each cover.

Which cover is your favorite? Do you agree with my pick?

Friday Face-Off: Smoke

This is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, but kept up by Lynn’s Book Blog.

“Where there’s fire there’s… ”

This weeks theme: A cover featuring smoke.

My Choice: The Complete Sherlock Holmes

Happy 4/20!!!!

For those of you that don’t know, in the USA, April 20th is “weed day.”  In Colorado weed is legal so on 4/20 there are huge rallies and parties downtown where everyone gets high.  I don’t do weed (in any form) so I won’t be participating but I know a few people who will be lighting up today.

I don’t know if it was planned or not, but “smoke” is a fitting theme for 4/20 haha.  I couldn’t find a good cover for smoking weed, so I chose a cover with just normal smoking.  The classic Sherlock Holmes!

Covers:

Penguin Books Limited 1981 | Penguin Books 2009 | Penguin UK 1983 | Thomas & Mercer 2012
Bantam Classics 1986 | Simon & Schuster UK 2012 | Barnes & Noble Classics 2011 | General Press 2015
Bedford Park Books 2010 | Top Five Books 2014 | ? 2016 | ? 2014
? 2016 | Doubleday 1960 | Mapleleaf Books 2013 | AB Books 2018
Barnes & Noble 2015 | Newton Compton 2009 | Vintage Classics 2009 | Bantam Doubleday 1992
? 2013 | Dorset Press 1988 | Book House 2016 | Gramercy Books 2002
Doubleday & Company 2009 | ? 2015 | Geddes & Grosset 2002 | MobileReference 2008

Goodreads has 318 different editions of The Complete Sherlock Holmes! I picked the first ish 28, and am going to pick from those! But there are TONS of other covers!

Top 8:

The way I normally format these posts I usually pick a top 4, but I couldn’t decide on only 4!

Winner:

I couldn’t decide on just one! I really like simplicity of the first one, but I love the overall feel of the second! They are both awesome!

Which cover is your favorite? Do you agree with my picks?

Friday Face-Off: Panorama

This is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, but kept up by Lynn’s Book Blog.

“Lawns and rocks and heather and different sorts of trees, lay spread out below them, the river winding through it”

This weeks theme: A cover featuring a panorama.

My Choice: Walk Two Moons

Covers:

HarperTrophy 1996 | HarperCollins 2011 | HarperTeen 2003 | HarperCollins 1994
Editra Arthur 2015 | Macmillan Children’s Book 2007 | MacMillan Publishing Company | نشر چشمه – کتاب ونوشه 2007
Mizan Pustaka 2003 | Macmillan Children’s Books 2001 | Destino 2011 | Mondadori 1998
Kluitman 2013 | Alma Littera 2001 | Minerva Nova 2004 | มติชน 2003
Biryongso/ Tsai Fong Books 2009 | Martins Fontes 2006 | Olympia 2001 | Fischer (Tb.), Frankfurt 2000

Walk Two Moons has a good mixture of really good covers and really bad covers. It has been so long since I read this book, that I don’t remember anything about it, other than that I had to read it for school and it wasn’t that bad.  I know I read the HarperCollins 1994 edition.

Top 4:

Winner:

Moon05

I really really like the blues and the silhouette of the girl!  I like the original cover because it actually has two moons, but this cover is overall better and still has a really great moon!

Which is your favorite? Do you agree with my pick?

Friday Face-Off: Family

This is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, but kept up by Lynn’s Book Blog.

“After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations”

This weeks theme: A cover featuring family.

My Choice: Saga #1

Covers:

First Print | Second Print | RRP Variant
Third Print | Fourth Print | Fifth Print

Ok so this one ended up being a little lame, but I got really excited because I love Saga! I looked through all the other issues and #50 is the only other cover with all three family members, and it only has 2 covers , the normal one and a virgin cover (meaning there is no writing)

Its kind of boring that all the different prints have the same cover and that only changed the color of the title (I like the 3rd print best) so my overall favorite is:

RRP Variant

While I like the original cover cuz its so controversial and awesome with her breastfeeding, Alana is just so fierce on this cover I love it!

Which do you like best? Have you read Saga? (Its awesome!!!)

Friday Face-Off: Seeds/Spores

This is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, but kept up by Lynn’s Book Blog.

“A little soil to make it grow”

This weeks theme: A cover featuring seeds/spores.

My Choice: Nim’s Island

(I googled it and coconuts are a seeds!!)

Source: Science ABC

Covers:

Yearling 2002 | Yearling 2008 | Puffin 1999
Knopf 2001 | Blackstone Audiobooks 2008 | Luis Vives 2008
Puffin 2008 | Edelvives 2014 | Zielona Sowa 2008

My Favorite:

Nim05

This is probably an unpopular choice because a lot of people don’t like movie covers, but I just love how much spunk the little girl has, and its really the only cover that captures the adventure!

Which one is your favorite? Do you agree with my choice?
