I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately, so to try and help me break it, I have decided to download a handful of Children’s books from NetGalley. I am hoping reading and reviewing those will help kick-start me back into reading regular books.

Who Did That?

I was very disappointed with this book. I was expecting it to be an investigative sort of question and answer book. I figured it would ask “could it have been the Lumberjack” and then answered “No! because he was working in the forest” or something like that. Where the kids have to search the pages for clues. Instead it lists the things that were broken and then lists 4 possible suspects and then just tells you who it really was.
Also, the language didn’t flow right. It was choppy and hard to read. I wasn’t a big fan of the artwork either, but that is just my personal taste, there was nothing wrong with it.
Overall I would read this to kids if it was handy but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it.
Worry Says What?

I have really bad anxiety so I was super curious to see how this book handled it, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it addressed anxiety. Obviously this book isn’t going to be an end-all cure for your child’s worries, but I think it is a great place to start! It personifies “worry” in order help children visualize and defeat it. At the end of the book it also gives tips on how to help your children overcome worry.
I loved the illustrations, and it was easy to read and flowed nicely! I would recommend this to read to kids with anxiety and worries.

This book is super cute! I love the illustrations and the story flows really well. Its very easy and fun to read! It is a great story about trying and not giving up. Argyle Fox wants to give up when he can’t find anything to play in the wind, but his Mom convinces him to think it through and try again! I would definitely recommend this book.
Porcupette Finds a Family

This book was sadder than I thought it would be. I knew it would be a little sad, but it was serious on top of sad, so it kind of compounded. The art on the cover is more cartoonish than the art inside, so that is a little misleading. Based on the cover I would have thought the book would be more lighthearted and cute, but instead it was very deep.
Its very well written and super cute, but its not a light read. I really liked it but it was also really sad. Porcupette loses his mom and is alone and scared. I was expecting there to be conversations between the animals, but it ended up being just Porcupette’s steam of conscious as he interacts with everything around him. The animals don’t talk to each other so everything is shown through their actions, which makes it more powerful, and very heartwarming at the end.
Worry Says What? Sounds like one I should definitely read! I think I take more out of these books now than I did when I was a kid. Hope your slump eases up!

I think it would have helped me as a kid! I really like the idea of anxiety, or worry, being a physical thing you can overcome ❤
