This is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, but currently run by Lynn’s Book Blog.
“‘Odin, Odin, send the wind to turn the tide.”
This weeks theme: A cover featuring a longboat.
My Choice: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
Soooo the boats on the cover probably aren’t actually longboats, but its close enough!
Covers:
HarperCollins 2003 | HarperCollins 2004 | Scholastic 2012 | Orchard 2003
Scholastic 1990 | Turtleback 2004 | Dtv 1995 | Steck-Vaughn 1998
Recorded Books 1992 | Santillana 2011 | Mondadori 1993 | Lions 1993
Unknown | EMC 1999 | Editorial Galaxia 2006 | Hayykitap 2009
Castoro 2015 | Tien-Wei 1998| Editorial Bambu | Flammarion 1994
Carlsen 1998 | Xiao Lu Wen 2009 | Collins Educational 1992 | Kaiseisha 2010
Least Favorites:
I really like the ship in the middle picture, but the random girl floating above it just ruins it!
Favorites:
The left cover is the one I read when I was in Middle School. I don’t remember much about the book, but I remember that I liked it a lot!
Winner:
This was one of my favorite books as a child! Thanks for reminding me of it!

I think the Harper Collins 2004 is my favorite. I thought Longboats was hard!! I literally had to google it. HA HA

Haha I had to google what a longboat was 😂😂 but I didn’t feel like googling books with longboats on the cover so I was lazy and just picked a book with a ship 😂

I think this is a wonderful looking book – and so long as it accurately reflects the content of the book – the Lion 1993 cover is my favourite. I love the way the young girl is surrounded by a very unsavoury-looking crew… A boat is such a cramped, claustrophobic environment, especially during dirty weather or when a boat becomes lost.

Based on the description of the book it seems to fit haha (I don’t remember enough about the book!)

Such a specific theme this week, I love your pick! Out of your three favorites, I think I’m keen on the middle one a little bit more, but they’re all great!

It was super specific! I like that one best on a pure art style choice, but I love female pirates and so the other one draws me in more!

I will agree with your choice. However none of them really spoke to me.

I liked a lot of these covers haha but everyone has different tastes 😀

Yes. If everyone liked the same things the world would be a boring place

Oh my gosh! I remember reading this one a long time ago. I liked it, but I don’t fully remembered what happened. I like the first one you posted. 🙂

The Carlsen 1998 edition is catching my eye! Again, I just love how the ship features so prominently!

I like your choice but also the middle cover from your favourites – it really stood out for me immediately and I just like the sense of movement.

I really like that one too! I have a thing for female pirates tho, so that is the only reason the other cover won out 😀

I like both of those too! The Scholastic one kind of looks like a paper doll to me, but in a good way.

I don’t think I know of any covers with a longboat specifically, so I’d say this is good enough lol. Wow, there are so many here! That floating face kinda makes it look like a textbook? My fave is Kaiseisha 2010, though idk if it suits the book. I do like the one you chose too!

Haha thanks 😀 And it totally does make it look like a textbook! 😂 Maybe that is why I disliked it so much! I think the Kaiseisha 2010 fits the story but I couldn’t get over the depth perception being off, it looks like the boat is up and down.

I read this book to my classes when I was teaching and they always enjoyed it. Great choice. I like the HarperCollins 2004 cover, although the one I had was the 2003 version.

One of my favorite books when I was younger. There are so many great covers to choose from! I think my cover was Lion’s 1993. Your is a better updated version. It’s easy to imagine yourself n her place. Thanks Brittany! ❤️❤️
