Friday Face Off: Wrap Around Covers

Friday Face Off is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, and run by Lynn’s Book Blog.

“It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.”

This weeks theme:  A wrap around cover.

My Choice: Harry Potter (US Covers)

As far as I can tell, there are only 4 different sets of US Harry Potter Covers and they all either wrap around, or have some sort of connecting pictures.

Covers:

Original US Editions (art by Mary GrandPré)

Harry Potter Covers

I own the paperback versions of these, and unfortunately they don’t have the full wrap around covers:

2013 Special Edition Box Set (art by Kazu Kibuishi)

Harry Potter Series

These covers don’t wrap around, but when you stack them together, the spines form a picture:

Also, its fun to note that on the back of these covers you can see Harry’s back:

Again, these aren’t wrap around covers but they do connect to form one really cool picture:

Illustrated Editions (art by Jim Kay)

So far only four Illustrated Editions.  I know they all have wrap around covers but it was impossible for me to find good pictures:

I love the idea of the connecting covers but I am not a huge fan of the artwork in parts of these (particularly the large floating head)

Favorites:

This is pretty much a three way tie between the other three sets

Harry Potter Covers

Harry Potter Series

Illustrated

I own the original set so it will always hold a special spot in my heart.  And I love the artwork in both the 2013 and Illustrated sets and could never choose.

Winner:

I can’t pick a winner! Other than the 2018 set I love them all ❤

Which is your favorite? Do you agree with my choice? Let me know in the comments!!

  1. It’s indeed to hard to choose! I do agree with your least favourite, the head in the middle is a bit weird..

  2. Oh wow – you did a proper job on these… it didn’t occur to run a comparison on these the way you did. And yes, you’re right – they are all fabulous:)). I echo Lynn’s observation about the spine artwork. And I LOVE the fact we see Harry’s back on the back of the cover.

    1. I own the original US ones but in paperback so they don’t have the wrap around covers. I also own the 2014 UK ones 😀 I thought about adding those to the list but didn’t because I wanted to stick to the US covers.

Thanks! It was surprisingly hard to find them all haha

  3. Great post! I honestly love the original cover books the best. I especially love that they have illustrations at the start of every chapter. I had all the original book covers from when I was a kid, but I think moving around so many times, especially after I left home and my parents would pack my stuff away, meant that a few of the books have disappeared. Makes me incredibly sad! Lol

    1. Thanks 😀 I forgot about the chapter art!! And I had a mix of the paperback and hardcover editions from the first set of covers but moving and lending them to friends I lost a bunch of them too 😦 I have replaced them and now have a full set of the paperbacks! Sorry you lost yours too 😦 That sucks!

      1. Yes, to replacing! I’m planning to buy the full set of hardcovers that I saw at one of the bookstores around here a few months ago. I’m hoping that they still have it in stock and I’m not too late 😂
