101 years ago today, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, WWI formally ended. Known as Veterans Day in the US, Remembrance Day in Canada and the UK, and Armistice Day in France, today is a day to remember and celebrate those who serve in the military.
I would like to thank all members of militaries past, present, and future. Thank you for your service, and for fighting for your countries. Thank you for fighting for the ones you loved and everyone else along with them. I appreciate your service and your sacrifice. Thank you.
There are many ways to celebrate and honor military, and one of those ways is through fiction. The is a full sub-genre of Science Fiction dedicated to Military stories. (Aptly titled Military Science Fiction)
I don’t read a ton of Military Science Fiction, (or really military books at all) but I have read Ender’s Game which is the top book on both of Goodreads Military SciFi lists (here and here)
I also just learned that Starship Troopers is a book too! I obviously haven’t read the book, but I have seen the movie along with Star Wars, Ender’s Game, and Captain America: The First Avenger.
As far as TV shows go, I haven’t really seen any SciFi Military shows, but I did love Mal and Zoe, and they were military before the show.
I never gravitate towards military sci-fi either – it’s often quite hard sci-fi I find, and I prefer soft sci-fi – but I do love Firefly. 🙂

I prefer my sci-fi with a bunch of fantasy in it haha and Hard Sci-Fi doesn’t usually have that. But of course Firefly is amazing ❤

Wish I would have thought of war books yesterday for Veterans Day.

I love this post! And you just reminded me how much I love the movie Starship Troopers. It’s time for a rewatch😁

FIREFLY! You made me happy today with an unexpected visit to Mal and Zoe. 🙂 I read a terrific sci-fi series last year: Old Man’s War by John Scalzi. It’s funny and complex, and war is obviously a theme. I’d say The Expanse series too — it’s amazing sci-fi, and interplanetary wars are a piece of the whole.

Yay! Firefly is the best ❤ I have heard of John Scalzi but haven't read anything by him, but I will have to check it out! Thanks 🙂

I read and enjoyed the first two Frontlines books by Marko Kloos, but I don’t normally read a lot of military sci-fi, either. Starship Troopers is on my TBR, though!

I need to re-watch Starship Troopers and decide if I want to read the book haha

I suspect the movie and the book are completely different, LOL. But I enjoy the movie as a campy fun sci-fi action flick!

My favorite movies are Star Wars too. Ender’s game book was great. I haven’t read many military sci-fi as it is not my favorite subgenre.

Yea Military Sci-Fi seems to be a pretty small niche, its not my favorite either haha.

I don’t think I’ve read or seen a lot of military sci-fi because I prefer more fantasy-like sci-fi, but I do have the original Star Wars trilogy and Starship Troopers on my movie list for this month 🙂

So I have a funny story. Monday one of my friends messaged me and she had been wearing a ‘veteran of serenity valley’ pin from Firefly and someone in her work thanked her for her service while getting off the elevator and the door shut before she could explain to him and she was like ‘idk if he thought there was an actual battle called that or if he was a firefly fan and was joking with me or what’ and I couldn’t stop laughing.

That is amazing! Haha I would totally get the reference but I don’t think a lot of people would 😂😂
